BRYAN ANDRÉ An experienced singer-songwriter of country folk rock from
Matimekush-Lac John (Schefferville), Bryan André already knew, as a kid,
that he would end up on stage. Having grown up with the Innu Nikamu
festival, which he adores, he considers himself a product of that
environment.
Bryan became the singer of the band Tshimun in the 1990’s, with whom, at
the age of 14, he recorded the album Nitanish. He has since released two albums of his
own, Anisheniu in 2002, and Nipeteti released in 2009.
NINAN After the album Innu Auass, a music video for the song of the same name,
and several performances in 2021, the group Ninan has the wind in its
sails. Directed by the singer Samian, the music video generated nearly
40,000 views on the YouTube platform.
The six members of the group, from the communities of Matimekush
Lac-John and Uashat mak Mani-utenam, are happy to see that their
popularity goes beyond Innu communities and other regional First Nations
to reach all corners of the province and beyond.
According to its members, the group’s success is an example of the
importance of believing in one’s dreams and working hard to achieve
them. Their music celebrates nature, lived experiences, and Innu culture
and language against a backdrop of identity pride. This is the message
that Ninan wants to convey to its audience in Indigenous communities.
FREDERICK PENASHUE Frederick hails from the Innu community of Sheshatshiu. He began playing
music at the age of 13 and wrote his first song five years later. He
has played his pop rock in several Innu communities ever since.
