Peregrine Falls (Vancouver)
“Modern jazz for metalheads” is what Georgia Straight calls Peregrine Falls, a scorching duo of Gordon Grdina (guitar) and Kenton Loewen (drums). The pair has worked together for years, creating an uncannily symbiotic creative relationship, both in the “avant Arabic” ten-piece Haram, and as key members of Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. Call it post-jazz. Or free-punk. Peregrine Falls is the purest, most raw manifestation of these two musicians’ omnivorous creativity and telepathic musical rapport. Hold on: it’s about to get bumpy.
Not the Wind, Not the Flag (Toronto)
Two monks were arguing about a flag. One said: “The flag is moving.” The other said: “The wind is moving.” The sixth patriarch happened to be passing by. He told them: “Not the wind, not the flag; mind is moving.” This is the festival premiere of Not the Wind, Not the Flag, the Toronto duo of Brandon Valdivia (percussion, gaita, flutes, shona mbira) and Colin Fisher (percussion, saxophones, ney, guitar, oud, ngoni, guzheng). Music is a way of accessing the divine. “Vibration is the echo of our creation.” For Colin and Brandon the experience of music is a transformative tool. A conduit for gnosis and discovering the true self.
