Few pianists played with the soaring abandon and the percussive fury of the late American pianist Don Pullen (1941-1995). But Pullen was also a composer of lyrical masterpieces that have gone largely unheard since his untimely passing. Canadian musicians Jane Bunnett (saxophones) and Larry Cramer (trumpet) have formed “Song Everlasting” to pay tribute to a friend and frequent collaborator. Along with their regular collaborators David Virelles (piano), Kieran Overs (bass) and J.T. Lewis (drums), they have invited one jazz legend to pay tribute to another: the phenomenal multi-brass virtuoso Howard Johnson, whose associations with Charles Mingus, the Band, Taj Mahal, Gil Evans and others, including his own tuba ensemble Gravity, are literally too numerous to mention. “Song Everlasting” is no ordinary concert: it’s an event not to be missed!
